Held at The Forktree Project property near Carrickalinga; Australia’s first International Dark Sky Community.

A 90 minute multicultural guided tour of the night sky with laser pointer and large telescope. Experience a dark night sky that’s close to Adelaide. We are one of a handful of astronomy tours anywhere that routinely includes night sky interpretations from non-Western cultures and from southern hemisphere indigenous cultures. Plus the modern textbook interpretations too.

The tour location is accessed from the Whitelaw Road gate (about 100 metres off Forktree Road). It’s a few minutes drive from Normanville and Carrickalinga and Myponga, about 20 minutes from Second Valley, about 35 minutes from the Kangaroo Island ferries, about 40 minutes from McLaren Vale or Victor Harbor, and about 80 minutes from Adelaide city.

If your tour is cancelled, you will be offered an alternate date (if possible),  a refund, or a conversion to a Gift Voucher.

We will send a message to your mobile phone on the day of your tour, to tell you if your tour is weather cancelled or not. If cancelled you then have the option of rescheduling (subject to availability), a refund, or conversion to a gift voucher.

Cloud Forecasting is not reliable or accurate until the actual day of your tour. This is our conclusion after 30+ years of direct local experience, and testing of dozens of weather forecasting services / models / websites / apps.
If you’re booking overnight accommodation we recommend you see/do other things in our local area (www.visitfleurieucoast.com.au) during the day time too.

Please arrive at The Forktree Project entrance (Whitelaw Road, Carrickalinga, about 100 metres from the Forktree Road intersection) by 5 minutes prior to the tour starting time.
A location map is attached to this email.

What to bring:
  —  Dress warmly even in summer, it gets cold on most evenings. And we’re outdoors on top of a plateau, exposed to the wind.

  —  Outdoor bench seating is available during tour. You can bring a folding chair if you prefer.

  —  There is a toilet on site.

  —  The tour is a no-alcohol event.

  —  (optional)  a small red torch, so that you don’t destroy everyone’s night vision with a white torch.

  —  (optional)  binoculars or camera.

  —  Accredited guide dogs or assistance dogs may attend the tour. All other dogs and pets are banned; due to several serious accidents during previous tours. Please leave them at home or inside your car.

  —  Please leave your light-emitting shoes / clothes / jewellery / toys and gadgets at home. The light from these things destroys everyone’s night vision.

Where to sleep afterwards:
  — Normanville and Carrickalinga are a few minutes drive away. These towns contain many holiday rental apartments & houses, caravan parks, and Bed & Breakfast accommodations. The Fleurieu Coast Visitor Information Centre is open 7 days/week and has a complete list of local accommodations.

  — The centre of Adelaide is about 80 minutes drive away at the times we finish our tours. Victor Harbor or McLaren Vale are both about 40 minutes drive away.

Beware of wandering wildlife and fog on the roads after sunset.  If your car has Fog Lights on the front, use them when you’re outside towns at night.

Where to get dinner before the tour, within 15 minutes drive of Forktree.
Booking in advance is recommended, especially during weekends or the summer months:
  — Forktree Brewery is 5 minutes drive away, offering a dining room and a spectacular view of the coast and sunset.
  — The Yankalilla Hotel and the Normanville Hotel both have dining rooms.
  — Mare Bello Pizzas in Normanville has a small dining area; plus takeaway.
  — Takeaway meals are also available from various shops on the main streets of Normanville and Yankalilla.
Limited opening hours may apply during the winter months.
